The origins of CLAT

Any Jamaican will know that anything infront of Clat is bad word. For example raasclat, bloodclat, bumboclat or a combination of the two bumborassclat. But where did clat come from? One explanation I got was that it comes from cloth but while it makes sense for bloodcloth rasscloth etc. makes no sense. While doing the Gleaners puzzles I made the word clout and asked The Most Honorable what it means. He preceeded to raise his hand in a sweeping motion. I was suprised so I drew for the good old Oxford Dictionary and this is what I found:

clout informal n. a heavy blow with the hand or a hard object

v. hit hard

It then clicked that maybe clat came from clout. Imagine in 1717 a British man saying "clout him." Now picture a Jamaican saying "clout him," I think it would sound like "clat him Shrimpy clat him." Fi know which part yuh a go yuh mus' know which part yuh a come from, (Or at least try to find out).

Cell phones in Jamaica have become just like underwear............... A NECESSITY ( or so one would think, some of us do prefer to wear none). With the burning desire for cell phones and three competitors to choose from Digicel, Claro and Lime you can't help but think who is the best? Customers always want the best in quality, price and service just to mention a few.

I am currently with digicel and I lost my blackberry. So I call 100 ASAP and the customer service representative asks me if I have my welcome letter? "Wha? I don't know which part to find that now." She proceeds to ask me for the month and year I bought my Sim Card. "I was like you can't be serious. Ok the year would be 2006 and seeing that it is the Notchilous phone and the first shirt was printed in the November of that year that's my guess. She says that's correct. My response was "Thank you Father." So she proceeds to ask me if I know my IMEI code. I was like "yes, yes, yes." I got an email back in the day that said if you press *#06# your 15 digit IMEI code appears and should write it down and keep it in a safe place so that the police can track your phone. With the current 'Dudus' affair I don't think my phone is a priority, however no one else should be able to use my phone but I and I. She proceeds to tell me its been barred and no one can use it on the digicel network and there can be no access to my email accounts. I asked her what about Claro and Lime? She said you can try them and see if they will do the same.

So I called Lime first and they are not as sour as one would seem. They took my IMEI code and barred it on there system. So the phone can never be connected on Lime.

So then I called Claro the network I was thinking (keyword thinking) of switching to for better rates. She puts me on hold and says she has to check if they take IMEI codes and block them. She comes back and says no I am sorry we dont offer that service. Clearing my throat I asked "if someone comes with my phone to hook it up on your network you will just hook up a stolen phone?" she goes "yeah I guess."

So now tell me who are the real thieves? Man like 'Dudus' is a basic school student compared to these university criminals. As the Prophet Capleton rightly says "be careful of dem cellular and pagers."

Partying is Dead

Why do you party? Is it the music? Is it the drinks? Is it the food? Or a combination of all three?

Notchilous goes out for the music. The DJ/Selector is suppose to entertain the masses with his original musical selections and creative technical skills. With the juggling of hits after hits your suppose to be soaking wet so that you make a quick dash to the bar to get ah one strong drink and continue to build on the vibes. Sound systems such as Stone Love, Metro Media and the emergence of the Japanese sound Mighty Crown, just to name a few, have that vibe down pat.

Partying is now a money making thing with the evolution of SUPER All-Inclusives backed by large corporations. More effort is put into the food and drinks and less time on the music. There is no playing to tempo and content of tunes, it is just a random playlist. Then to put the icing on the cake they have a tendency to play each song for approximately 30 seconds or less. Dem all cut the song before the chorus which leaves you thinking WTF. As a result there is no structural vibe its like your on a blasted roller coaster. Nothing is more frustrating when there are a trailer load of DJ's at a party and they are constantly repeating songs previously played as if there are not enough hit tunes! Can I say instant bruk vibes!

Partying nowadays is like a technological fashion show where people are just standing around talking about the latest blackberry's and critiquing other peoples attire. Going out is not a come as you are. J'ouvert is the best example of a come as you are, which is why the vibe is always off the chain.

When there were only 45's LP's and 12 inch singles you had to buy the best music available to come and play out at parties. CD's and MP3's allow access to all music and we all thought that this would make it better. To my surprise it has made it worse as every man feels he is a selecta, when all they do is make a mockery of a once incredible art-form, by short-changing the people with there poor mixing and everlasting meaningless chatting. These DJ's just come for the hype and money and not for the love of the music. Most lack the ability to play music off of the crowd's energy. My Dad once told me "when you are good the money will come."

Bounty Killer sums it up perfectly "We tiad ah di F*@KERY and we fed up from bout 95."

We need to bring back SHANDY bottling when the sound dem try to rob our hard earned recession money.

And for any DJ that is offended if the cap fit you must wear it!
